Another decision that must be made early in the pregnancy concerns the type of birth you wish to have. You may want a birth at a hospital, or you may want a home birth with a midwife and a couple of support people present. Your choice will depend on the facilities in your area, such as the availability of midwives or birth centres, as much as on your personal preferences. You should investigate all possibilities thorougly.
If both parents are going to be present, it will be a more rewarding experience if each is equally well informed regarding the birth process and the roles each is to play. Make sure that everyone who is going to be present at the birth you can retain control of the situation, if that is what you wish. Also, build some degree of flexibility into your birth plan, so that if, for example, there are complications involved in your planned home birth, a transfer to hospital can be made smoothly, without confusion and without either parent feeling disappointed or guilty.
